Is the Government Shut Down Affecting Your Trail Work? 15 R. Rasmussen Here on the Olympic Peninsula of Washington state - the shutdown has affected our trail maintenance effort substantially. This is the time of year we plan for and gain internal USFS approvals for trail projects throughout the rest of the year. Because that work has been slid - that means site visits have slid thus no internal approvals or reviews get done. It is a cascading mess and it has already compromised our season's schedule. This work is critical as our local Forest does not have a trail crew! Any and all trail work is accomplished by volunteers. Plus the USFS has a freeze on outside hiring so if they do fill a trails vacancy - they must hire from within. This compounds the skills deficit. Kind of like life in a Cuisinart machine.
